Harissa - Spicy Tunisian Paste

Let's make spicy pepper paste from Tunisia.

Harissa is a flavourful addition to sauces, soups, pastas or marinades. It goes well with any meat or fish, be it fried, baked or grilled. It can be made out of a few ingredients easily available in stores. How much olive oil you put in will let you adjust the spiciness - the less oil, the spicier the paste.

Ingredients

  • 250 g grilled bell peppers
  • 4-5 hot chili peppers
  • 5 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp dried coriander
  • 0.5 tsp smoked paprika
  • 0.5 tsp cayenne
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper

Method

  1. Soak chili peppers in boiling hot water for 30 minutes.
  2. Once the peppers are soaked, clean out the seeds and slice the peppers.
  3. Into a blender add grilled peppers, sliced chili peppers and garlic.
  4. Add spices: salt, pepper, cumin, coriander, cayenne and smoked paprika. Add lemon juice. Blend until smooth.
  5. Gradually add in olive while blending until all the ingredients are well combined.
  6. Enjoy!
